In the month of June 1785, the first group of Acadians from the settlement of Ste. Anne travelled up the St. John River and established the foundation for a settlement in the Madawaska Territory. During the summerthe colonists selected land and began clearing it. Some settled on thesouth bank of the river, near the cross they had erected upon their arrival. Others went on the other (north) side of the river near Riviere Verte. Included in the list of names of the first colonists as they appear on the official list sent to the commissioner by the Honorable Jonathan Odell is Antoine CYR (on the south bank, at Grand Isle) and Olivierand Pierre Cyr (on the north bank).
