Note: "The Missouri Compromise" was a solution that settled one of themost
controversial topics of the 1820s: admitting Missouri (formerly part of
Louisiana) into the Union as a slave state. The Compromise allowed Missouri
into the Union as a slave state at the same time that Maine (formerly part
of Massachusetts) was admitted as a free state, thereby maintaining a
political balance of 12 free states and 12 slave states. "Missouri" became
a popular name for daughters in Southern states during this period.
