Pierre Bourq was born about 1785 in the region around Isle Madame, on the southern end of Cape Breton Island. He was the third son of the three known children of Pierre Bourg and Cecile Dugas. The Arichat (Ile Madame) church records of this time period were lost in a fire in 1838, sosome specifics are unavailable, but much has been reconstructed from earlier and later entries and neighbouring church records.
About 1808, Pierre Bourq married Anne Boucher, daughter of Louis Boucher and Perpetue Landry. Pierre and Anne were fourth cousins through the Petitpas family - Pierre's great great grandparent, Claude, son of Claude Petitpas and Anne Boucher's great great grandparent, Marguerite Petitpas were siblings. Anne's ancestors had been around Cape Breton , formerly known as Ile Royale, for generations.
