Anna was an excellent swimmer and regularly participated in the annual Fourth of July marathorn swim from Dane St. beach (Beverly's beach) to Marblehead and return a distance of about ten miles. A remarkable feat. She also worked as a telephone operator in Beverly, one of the few jobs available to women in those days. Anna's aunt ran a boarding house in Beverly where Bill stayed when he first arrive from Nashua. They met there when she occasionally helped out waiting on table.
