Hello David,
I am Gayle Dudley and am a descendant of William and Sarah Brimley Read. My father is Linley Couch, his mother is Catherine M. Read Couch, herfather is Josiah Read, who is a son to Wm. & Sarah Read.
I have been checking records over the years, also obtaining copies of life sketches from the Daughters of Utah Pioneers History Dept. The oneof Sarah was written by the Bailey descendants, copying material from along lost memory book of Margaret Bailey Anderson's genealogy. Some of this information does not coordinate with mine.
My question is regarding your well-written sketch of Sarah that I foundon the internet.
You have Sarah born 30 May 1793 to parents John and Mary Smith Read. However, I have seen the parish record that records her birth as 1794 andsurprisingly enough to John and Elizabeth Read. We have had two genealogists trying to figure which name is correct. Evidently there were two John Reads. Burial records did not show death of Mary, thinking that he married the second time to an Elizabeth. No conclusive evidence either way. This has to be proven by someone, I guess. I feel like I am getting too old to do it.
I have gone into the immigration records and found all the dates for the family when they left England. Records do not show children Joel, Jesse or James as leaving England at all.
Now to my big question.... You mention that Naomi was deserted by her betrothed shortly before the scheduled marriage date and left to rear a young son. That is the first time that I have heard that! Would you bekind enough to send me your info about that?
My family record says she married a Samuel Sumner on May 28, 1853 in Slaugham, Sussex, England.
The info that you stated about Naomi, struck a bell in my mind. From immigration records, a Joseph Read, 14 yrs old came over with William and Sarah. I have always surmised that it could have been Amelia Read Bailey's son. Now I am wondering if this is the son of Naomi! He is definitely not the son of Sarah according to my records.
If you could straighten me out, I would appreciate it.
Also, her son, John, was the first white man killed by Indians in Franklin, Idaho. His death was in 1860. Sarah evidently was walking to thehome of his widowed wife in Slaterville when she died that evening there on 18 Jun 1962.
I am interested to know which line you come through?
Sincerely,
Gayle Dudley

Thank you so much for your answer.
Leland Jones came by to get my information that belonged to my mother probably way back in the 80's.
I went to that site that you gave. Yes, I will probably subscribe! There was more info there that interested me.....and I'm particularly gladthat he has some sources.
This week I have found in 'round-about-ways' (Immigration, Emigration, diaries, etc) material that suggests to me that Naomi's son, Joseph, wasraised by grandparents, William and Sarah Brimley Read. I do believe that Joseph, 14, listed with the Reads in the Willie Company (1856), wasNaomi's son.
It is interesting to note in following Naomi's immigration in 1868, that she joined a company across the plains that was met by some teamsters from Salt Lake City, of which one of the drivers was a Joseph Read, 22, from SLC. I believe since the dates coordinate, that Joseph was meeting his mother. This is all conjecture, but seems to fit.
Thank you for showing my line through to the earliest Brimleys. I did not have the Brimley extended that far. In fact, my names are different! The way I have it.....Naomi, Sarah, John, John.....that is as far I my records show.
So my line would be....Gayle, Catherine, Josiah, Sarah, John, John.
I am chuckling....this 'genealogy business' can be mind-boggling!! George, Samuel and Thomas are new ones!!! But how and where?!?!?
And thank you again. I can see I need to meet Leland Jones once more. Iwill subscribe and find his detailed info on that site.
