There is some disagreement about whether John PAYNE married Lucy COLE (source DC0251) or whether he married Mary S. COLE (source 2DC049). Lucy and Mary S. were sisters. There is no disagreement about the children though. Their daughter, Dorthea (Dolly) PAYNE or Dorothea (Dolly) PAYNE, married Pres. James MADISON (b. 17 Mar 1749/50), the president ofthe USA. I have attached the children to Mary S. COLE. The decision was made because her relationship to John PAYNE was more documented thanfor Lucy.
