David: I have been hired by a woman to research the
ancestry of Erastus E. Payne. A family story
indicates a possible Loyalist father, the John Payne
ID I00584 on your ancestry.com database seems to fit.
In researching probate records in Windham, CT [Lebanon
probate is located in Windham pre 1826] I ran across
the following and thought you would be interested:

Of great interest is a special probate record, 5:217,
located in Windham, CT regarding Nathan Tisdale dated
28 Sept 1787: At a Court of Probate held at Lebanon
[CT] Mr. John Payne of Hartford, Windsor County,
Vermont came personally before this court in his own
and on behalf of his wife Lydia who is sister to
Nathan Tisdale late of Lebanon deceased moved to
appeal from the sentence and judgment of said Court
on the ____ day of ____ last [no date recorded here
and no further records located pertaining to this
appeal] allowing and approving the last Will and
Testament [not found in Windham]. Court allows appeal.
John Payne and Mr. Thomas Trapp of Norwich, CT give a
bond of 100 pounds to Zerviah Tisdale and John Porter,
executors of last will [of Nathan Tisdale], John Payne
shall prosecute his said appeal to attest and answer
all damage in case he fail to make his plea good.
[This is intriguing, but there were no further records
to explain the necessity of this appeal. A further
check in Lebanon land records may reveal some
information].
