Hugh Ingram, paterfamilias, was born at Thorp-on-the Hill, Rothwell, Yorks, and migrated to London as a young man where he became a successfulhaberdasher.
In 1652 he married Anne, daughter of Richard Goldthorpe (Lord Mayor of York 1556 and MP 1559), and they had three sons, William (later Canon ofYork Minster), Arthur (who bought and rebuilt Temple Newsam house in 1622), and John.

A London merchant called in his will "citizen and tallowchandler". He made a fortune as a draper.
Will dated 25 Feb 1613/14, proved 29 Mar 1614, London.
