Introduction

There is a need for a Silent Monitor Switch that announces an Alert when an expected event does not occur. This concept was originally called a "Dead Man Switch" in a Railroad Locomotive where such a switch would stop a train if the Engineer died or was not able to drive the train. This same concept has been put in place by Russia to launch nuclear attacks in case Russian leadership is eliminated. This Russian system is also known as "Dead Hand", Perimeter or 15E601.

The Silent Monitor Switch is a website that houses and monitors such a switch. Initially an agent creates or enques the switch. When it is time to put the Silent Monitor Switch into action, the switch is armed and is ready to raise an alert if the trigger time of the alarm is not deferred or suspended. Once fully armed, if the switch is not reset before its trigger time, an alert is sent. This alert is sent to a responsible agent that knows what to do upon receipt of the alert. It is very important that the trigger time be periodically reset.

A simple situation making use of a Silent Monitor Switch is the case of a Refrigerator in a vacant house while the owner of the house is on vacation. The fridge is equipped with a monitor that announces to the Silent Monitor Switch that it is functioning correctly at regular 1 minute intervals. If the fridge power fails, the monitor does not announce that it is running normally. The Silent Monitor Switch should notice that the fridge monitor did not "check in" at the next scheduled time. The Silent Monior Switch sounds the alert by sending a notice to the person responsible for the fridge. This person should then take the necessary action to remedy the situation. The remedy might be to phone a neighbor to ask them to verify why the fridge monitor stopped. These announcements (the regular "check in" and the alert announcement) are both simple email messages.

The concept of a Silent Monitor was first described in an article by the author in Source 02.

Unrelated Thoughts

A recent version (v72) of PiR2_CheckUp_E.py can be found in Source 03 (It is stored as a txt file to permit it to be easily downloaded to a Raspberry Pi.) The PiR2_CheckUp program was designed to check if all of the physical components of the PiR2 system are functional.

"biblical demand" for OpenAI's GPT-4o

The AI assistant has been adding 1 million new users an hour amid "biblical demand" [Ed. Note: ie Apocalyptic] for its GPT-4o, which is now available for free users of the app (as per Source 04). Sam Altman credits this growth to the "Ghibli memes" produced by GPT-4o which is now free to use (as of 2025 D Apr 01). The image below infers that OpenAI-o1 preview is even better than GPT-4o and has a higher IQ than the average human.

[Ed.Note: o1 is more recent than 4o]
According to OpenAI's release notes tasks involving textual understanding and creative writing (i.e. less formal logic) are better done with GPT-4o. This is according to Source 05. Not only is it [Ed. Note: OpenAI-o1] much faster, but it can browse the internet and generate and analyze images. Take a look at this comparison (Image credit OpenAI):

o1 is preferred (to 4o)

In this comparison, humans were asked to judge which replies they liked more, GPT-4o's or the new o1 model. When it came to writing and editing text, the models were on par. As mentioned above the more logic something involved the more the strengths of the new o1 models became visible. These are the exact use-cases o1 was designed for. At the beginning it is worth experimenting with both to find when it is worth using o1. In this tutorial on using AI for academic writing you can learn how to best leverage AI for this purpose. [Ed. Note: GPT4 Omni is often called and is the same as GPT-4o.]

Comparing microSD cards

In Source 06, Patrick (of Raspberry Tips), compared various microSD cards using various software tests. The results of his unzip test are shown in the image below:

Patrick concludes that SanDisk Extreme Pro and SanDisk Extreme are the fastest and the most expensive. Kingston is the cheapest and the slowest.
