Robert Cole, born about 1598 (about 1605 per Vol. 1, p. 437 of The Great Migration Begins) in England (said to be variously from: Berghold, County Suffolk; Sudbury, County Suffolk; or Navestock, County Essex, England), came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony with the Winthrop Fleet in the spring of 1630. According to The Winthrop Fleet of 1630 by Charles Edward Banks, there were about 700 passengers in the fleet, which included men, women and children, but about 200 of the passengers died between the date they left England in April, 1630 and the end of the following December. Another 100 passengers returned to England, according to a letter dated 1631, from Thomas Dudley to Bridget, Countess of Lincoln, "partly out of dislike for our government, which restrained and punished their excesses, and partly through fear of famine (not seeing any other means than by their labour to feed themselves)." Ibid. p. 47. This book also says that according to the Roxbury Church Records kept by Rev. John Eliot, Robert Cole had come from Navestock, County Essex, England. Another source states that the significance of the Winthrop Fleet in early New England history is that it was the first one which brought immigrants to New England for secular reasons, i.e., to establish colonies, and not specifically for religious freedom.
According to a record on the FamilySearch web site, Robert Cole was a son of Nathaniel Cole, born 1578 at Sudbury, Suffolk, England.
Robert Cole was living in Roxbury, Massachusetts, when he petitioned to be made a "freeman" on 19 Oct 1630, and was granted that status by the General Court on 18 May 1631, along with 113 other men. He was disfranchised 4 Mar 1633/34, for a short time on account of his problem with drinking too much wine, when he was also ordered to wear a red letter "D" on his clothing for a year; however, his freeman status was reinstated about two months later on 14 May 1634, and the requirement to wear the letter "D" was also revoked at that time. While some people may find his drunkeness inexcusable, we should remember that there was no central heating in those days, and liquor, aside from its intoxicating effects, was probably used as a means of warming the body. See also, a description of the use of whiskey in 19th century Yates Co., New York, for a better understanding of the use of liquor in the early days of our country's history.
A definition of what "freeman" status meant in colonial times was found in a post made by John F. Chandler to the Roots-L mailing list, dated 12 Apr 1996, as follows:
In Colonial New England, up until about 1700, all the colonies used the term "freeman" to apply to full citizens. That's the answer in a nutshell. Each new Freeman took an oath, rather similar in outline to the citizenship oath administered to naturalized US citizens nowadays. Many residents back then never bothered to become Freemen, for one reason or another—for example, [in] Massachusetts, it was necessary to be a member in good standing of the local church to become a Freeman. Also, since the only benefits were voting and being eligible to hold certain public offices, I suppose some people didn't find the prospect all that appealing.

See also definition of "freeman" in The MacDonough-Hackstaff Ancestry.
While at Roxbury, he and John Johnson served as the two deputies from Roxbury to the General Court in 1632, when he helped draft the arbitration law. He was one of the 12 men who went with John Winthrop, Jr. in March, 1632/33, to establish Agawam, now known as Ipswich. In 1635, he appears on the records at Salem, Massachusetts, where later he sold 300 acres of land, which had been granted to him by the town, in order to follow Roger Williams to Rhode Island. In 1637, his name appears on records as one of the 12 original proprietors of the Providence Plantation, but he was not among the first party of six who went there with Roger Williams at their head, but joined them soon after. According to p. 446 of The MacDonough-Hackstaff Ancestry, his name is "the fourth mentioned in the 'Initial' deed of October 8, 1638, by which Roger Williams divided between twelve of his associates the land he had purchased from the Indians . . . . The land bought from the Indians and divided among the thirteen associates comprised all of Providence and what was later Pawtuxet." "He was one of the twelve, who probably in the autumn of 1638, and certainly before March 16, 1638/9, founded the first Baptist Church in America [at Providence]." Ibid. On 2 Sept 1650, he paid a town rate of £3 6s. 8d., which indicates he was among the five richest men in the colony. In a record of the Roxbury church members made by Rev. John Eliot, he wrote of Robert Coles' "unsettledness and moving from place to place," and the necessity of disciplining him by excommunication, but in later years after his removal to Rhode Island he appears to have become a more law-abiding citizen. On pp. 447-48, The MacDonough-Hackstaff Ancestry, it states: "It is true that he had been both excommunicated and disfranchised while in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, but he seems to have reformed himself even before he left there and there is certainly nothing in the Providence town records or those of Warwick, where he afterwards resided, to indicate that he did not lead a perfectly correct life in both places. His admission to the Baptist church and his commission from Massachusetts Bay to be one of the four officers of the peace in Pawtuxet are also indications that he had become a person of good repute."
In the book, Memoirs of the Wilkinson Family in America by Rev. Israel Wilkinson, A.M., published 1869, scanned pages of which are available on the internet at Memoirs of the Wilkinson Family in America, on p. 12 (or page Wilk00007.tif on the web site), there is a chapter on the Government of Rhode Island, where it states:
The Government of Rhode Island. The first article of agreement, or civil compact made by Roger Williams, and recorded is the following. It is copied verbatim from the Old Book with brass clips, page 1. The date is on the left hand page, and the civil compact on the right hand:
"August 20, 1637."We whose names are hereunder, desirous to inhabit in the town of Providence, do promise to submit ourselves in active and passive obedience to all such orders, or agreements as shall be made for the public good of the body in an orderly way by the major consent of the present inhabitants, masters of families, incorporated together into a Town fellowship, and others whom they shall admit unto them, only in the civil things.
Richard Scott, Edward Cope, William Reynolds, Thomas Angell, Chad Browne, Thomas Harris, John Warner, Francis Weeks, John Field, Benedick Arnold, George Richard, Joshua Winsor. William Wickenden,
Grants of land were made and recorded shortly after to Robert Cole, Francis Weston, Richard Waterman. . . .
On p. 13 of the same Wilkinson book it further states:
The following instrument, under signature of Roger Williams, names the company who were admitted to town fellowship on the payment of thirty pounds:
"Providence, 8th of the 8th month (so called), 1638.
"Memorandum, That I, Roger Williams, having formerly purchased of Caunnanicus and Miantinomu this our situation or plantation of New Providence, &c., the two fresh rivers of Wanasquatuckett and Mooshausick, and the ground and meadows thereupon; in consideration of thirty pounds received from the inhabitants of said place, do freely and fully pass, grant, and make over equal right and power of enjoying and disposing of the same grounds and lands unto my loving friends and neighbours,
Stukely Westcoat, John Throckmorton, William Arnold, William Harris, Thomas James, William Carpenter, Robert Cole, Thomas Olney, John Greene, Francis Weston, Richard Waterman, Ezekiel Holyman,
and such others as the major part of us shall admit into the same fellowship of vote with us:
As also, I do freely make and pass over equal right and power of enjoying and disposing of the lands and grounds reaching from the aforesaid rivers unto the great river Pautuxett, with the grass and meadows thereupon, which was so lately given and granted by the aforesaid Sachems to me; witness my hand,
Roger Williams."
[Emphasis added.]
Interestingly, there is a copy of the same agreement in the book, The MacDonough-Hackstaff Ancestry, on p. 449-50, which shows the original spelling of these words in the memorandum along with a postscript showing that the original document had apparently been lost and Roger Williams drew up another copy 28 years later.
It was once thought he had married his wife, Mary Hawkshurst (Hauxhurst) (daughter of Samson Hawkshurst, Vicar of Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England, and also a sister of Christopher Hawxhurst, who came with her from England in 1630) about 1637 at Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York; however, it now appears that he may have had two wives, both with the first name of Mary, but the first one probably died about 1637, and she was the mother of his first three or four children, John, Anne, Deliverance and Elizabeth (?), who had already married by the time of their father's death. It is now proposed that Mary (Hawkshurst) Cole was his second wife, and the mother of his younger children: Daniel, Nathaniel, Robert, Jr. and Sarah Cole. This conclusion was based on a document filed by his eldest son, John Cole, with the Warwick Town Council during the settlement of his father's estate, dated 8 Dec 1655, in which he referred to the widow of his father, Mary (Hawkshurst) Cole, as his "mother-in-law." Source: Vol. 1, p. 439, The Great Migration Begins by Robert Anderson, ©1995, New England Historic Genealogical Society.
Comment: The fact that John Cole referred to the widow of his father as "mother-in-law" seems to me to be a somewhat fragile reason to base the assumption that Robert Cole was married twice, since it is well-known that people in the 1600s and even the 1700s were not as precise as we are today about whom to call uncle, cousin, etc., so it is possible that John Cole called the widow of his father "mother-in-law" simply by virtue of the fact that she had been appointed the administratrix of Robert Cole's estate, and the term only refers to that, rather than that she was unrelated to him, except as his step-mother. Also it appears from the record of the distribution of the estate, that most of Robert Cole's children were under the age of 21 years when he died, and that perhaps only John was over the age of 21, so the argument that his three oldest children were already married when their father died also seems dubious, but, of course, women tended to marry when they were still in their teens in earlier times. See, The Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island, p. 51 for information on the distribution of Robert Cole's estate.
Additionally, The Great Migration Begins has no record of Robert Cole(s) having had a daughter named Elizabeth Cole(s), nor is there a record of her in the book The MacDonough-Hackstaff Ancestry, by Rodney MacDonough, published 1901; however, her name was included in a list of Robert Cole(s)' children in the the book The Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island . . . by John Osborne Austin, first published in 1887, with additions published in 1969, 1978 and 1982 by the Genealogical Publishing Company of Baltimore, Maryland, so I have kept that information in my listing here. Her name also appears in A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England: Showing Three Generations of Those Who Came Before May 1692, on the Basis of Farmer's Register, by James Savage, published in Boston 1860-1862, now also available on the web.
In the book, Annals of the Town of Providence, From Its First Settlement to the Organization of the City Government, in June, 1832, by William R. Staples, published 1843 by Knowles and Vose, Providence, there are a few references to Robert Cole: (1) pp. 32-33 on the deed for the Providence Plantation, originally dated 7 Oct 1638, written by Roger Williams many years later in 1666, memorializing his "grand purchase of Providence" in the Narragansett Bay from the Narragansett Indians, and his transfer of it "unto my loving friends and neighbors, . . . Robert Cole, . . ." and (2) on a report dated 27 5th mo. 1640, wherein his name is listed as one of a committee of four men, Robert Cole, Chad Brown, William Harris and John Warner, who drew up a document whereby the settlers agreed upon a form of government, and it was signed by the then 39 heads of families of Providence. Staples said of this document on p. 44:
From a perusal of this document, it is quite evident, that there existed in this little community, a great distrust and jealousy of delegated power. Experience had forced them to have recourse to it, and they endeavored to provide against its abuse, by the frequency both of the general meetings of the whole body, and of the elections of their officers. Though but a small remove from the perfect democracy of their first organized government, still it forms an epoch in the history of the Town.
On June 5, 1648, a record of Robert Cole, as an inhabitant, appears in the records of Warwick, Rhode Island, and it was at Warwick, where he died intestate (leaving no will) sometime prior to 25 Oct 1655, the date an inventory of his estate was filed with the Warwick Town Council, leaving an estate worth £501 with debts totaling £112.13s. According to The Great Migration Begins, Vol. 1, p. 436, he had signed a deed on 27 Apr 1655, so he died sometime between that date and 25 Oct 1655, when the Warwick Town Council met to "agitate and order concerning the estate of Mr. Robert Coles of this town late deceased and intestate." From the order for the distribution of his estate, it appears that most of his 8 children were under the age of 21 years at the time of his death. John Cole, his eldest son, inherited £80 and a mare, but the other distributions were dependent upon the child attaining the age of 21 years; however, the girls would receive their inheritance upon marriage or age 21 (The Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island, p. 51). After his death, his widow married Matthias Harvey, and moved to Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York, along with her children, Nathaniel, Daniel and her daughters who had married Townsends. On 27 Sep 1677, Daniel Cole and his brothers, Robert and Nathaniel, received from Governor Andros confirmation by patent of their lands at Oyster Bay.
GENERAL NOTES ON THIS CHART: Although there are over 350 individual names on it, this chart is not a complete record for all the descendants of Robert Cole, since not all lines have been recorded here. This is a compilation from different sources, and includes results of the research which my father and I did on this line of my mother's ancestry. There are discrepancies among the different sources regarding the birth dates of the children of Robert Cole. My direct line is from John Cole, eldest son of Robert Cole, and is accurate to the best of my knowledge, but I cannot vouch for the accuracy for all of the others. The names of Robert Cole's children and grandchildren are from John Austin's book referenced above. Also as noted previously, two reference books: The Great Migration Begins (TGMB) by Robert Anderson ©1995 New England Historic Genealogical Society and The MacDonough-Hackstaff Ancestry by Rodney MacDonough, published 1901, do not have a record of a daughter named Elizabeth for Robert Cole(s). Additionally, the TGMB book says that the wife of Nathaniel Cole was not Martha WRIGHT, but rather Martha JACKSON based on the 21-volume series Vital Records of Rhode Island, 1636-1850 by James N. Arnold, published in Providence, 1891-1912, Vol. 1:Warwick:34, but this information appears in Austin's The Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island, which I have followed here. Finally, David L. Martin of Tampa, Florida, who sent me a computer printout listing the following descendants, which have been mostly confirmed through other sources, stated that Robert Cole had royal ancestry, but I do not have that information.
